The Phillips Insulated Wire Company, now known as American Wire is located in the historic City of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. In 1946 American Wire moved into the plant, hence the name. The original building consisted of one four-story structure built in 1898, after that first building was constructed 12 more followed making it a complex of over 350,000 square feet. The materials used for the original structure was brick and heavy timber. Between the years of 1901 and 1917 thirteen more buildings were build, with these buildings it became one of the largest historic mills in the region.
The complex is located in the Darlington section of Pawtucket, about ¾ miles northeast of the city center. Today the structure has been converted into 138 residential units, as well as some commercial units. The client who converted the building was Brady Sullivan Properties and the project budget was $25 million. The buildings, prior to them being converted to apartments was used for manufacturing up until 2003. In the year following (2004) it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
